Bobby played football from 1943-44 as quarterback who in 1943 set an NCAA record that still stands, most total yards gained by a freshman, 458 against Nebraska. That is still an IU record as is the six touchdown passes he threw in that 54-13 win. Bobby led the NCAA in total offense in '43 while earning first team All-Big Ten and third team All-American honors. He ranks ninth on IU's career list in total offense and later played at Navy, in the 1944 College All-Star game, and professionally with the champion Detroit Lions.
