About Eric M. Meslin

Dr. Eric Meslin is Director of the Indiana University Center for Bioethics; Associate Dean for Bioethics in the Indiana University School of Medicine; and Professor of Medicine, of Medical & Molecular Genetics, of Public Health and of Philosophy. He also directs the Indiana University-Moi University Academic Research Ethics Partnership, a bioethics training program in Eldoret, Kenya funded by the US National Institutes of Health.

Born in Canada, Dr. Meslin received his B.A. in Philosophy from York University in Toronto, and both his M.A. and Ph.D. from the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University. His previous administrative positions include directing bioethics research for the Ethical, Legal and Social Implications (ELSI) program of the Human Genome Project, and as Executive Director of the U.S. National Bioethics Advisory Commission (NBAC) established by President Bill Clinton.

He has held academic positions at the University of Toronto (1988-96), as a Visiting Fellow at Green College, Oxford University (1994-95), and as Professor-at-Large at the University of Western Australia (2008-2010). During 2012-2013 he is on sabbatical as the Pierre de Fermat Chaire d'Excellence at the University of Toulouse.

He has more than 150 published articles and book chapters on topics from international health research to science policy. Dr. Meslin has been a member of several boards and committees including the recent Institute of Medicine's Committee on Ethical and Scientific Issues in Studying the Safety of Approved Drugs; and the Board of Directors of Genome Canada. He is a current member of the Ethics Subcommittee, Advisory Committee to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

On May 9, 2007 he was appointed a Chevalier de L'Order Nationale du Merite (Knight of the National Order of Merit) by the French Ambassador to the United States.
