Phyllis Garmon is a longtime supporter of Indiana University-Southeast, having received the 1998 Chancellor's Medallion from the school. She is married to the businessman Charles D. Garmon, and was involved in the founding of their company, Key Electronics, in 1978. She is an active participant in the New Albany community, which awarded her and her husband the Bales Humanitarian Award in 2008.
In 2020, Phyllis and Charles Garmon were presented the Bicentennial Medal for their distinguished service to Indiana University.
