Randall C. Jacobs had served from 2002 until his death in 2009 as Special Assistant to Chancellor Bruce Bergland, but his service to IU Northwest extended back to 1975, when he first joined the campus as a lecturer of technology in the Division of General and Technical Studies. Jacobs later assumed a variety of administrative roles in that and other academic units, and much later he served as Executive Dean of the School of Business and Economics from March 2001 until July 2002. He played a significant role in obtaining the Weed and Seed designation for Glen Park, which resulted in $1.2 million in federal grants coming to the community over five years.
Jacobs also worked for many years at St. Margaret Mercy Hospital in Hammond, where he served as vice president in 1979, and later at Northern Indiana Public Service Co., but even then he remained deeply engaged with the university as adjunct lecturer, past president of the IU Northwest Alumni Association, and in other roles. As Special Assistant, Jacobs worked on many campus projects related to community and legislative affairs. He later served on the Ancilla Systems Inc. Board of Directors and the St. Mary Medical Center Board of Directors.
Jacobs received the Chancellor's Medallion from IU-Northwest shortly before his death in 2009.
