About Jean Schweer

Jean Schweer was a professor emeritus of nursing at Indiana University School of Nursing. In 1955, Schweer joined the faculty at Indiana University School of Education, where she founded the first graduate program in medical-surgical nursing and later established a continuing education program at the School of Nursing in 1966. She remained at the school until 1986, retiring as an associate dean of continuing education in nursing. During her time at IU, she assisted in developing courses for future nurses as far away as Saudi Arabia. Schweer also authored a textbook in 1968, Creative Teaching in Clinical Nursing, along with numerous articles on the topic of continuing education.

Schweer also served on the Indiana Heart Association's education committee and was a member of the Indiana state Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International and Pi Lambda Theta honor societies, and the IU Alumni Association.

She received the IU School of Nursing's Distinguished Alumni Award in 1979 and was named Outstanding Adult Educator by the Indiana Association of Adult Continuing Education in 1986. She Received the IU School of Nursing's Emily Homquist Lifetime Achievement in Nursing Award in 2002. In 1996, IU created the Jean E. Schweer Distinguished Lectureship in Continuing Education to honor her work at the school.
