About John Tinder

John D. Tinder is a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He was appointed to the bench by President Ronald Reagan on June 2, 1987 and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 7, 1987.

Tinder graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor's degree in 1972 and a juris doctorate in 1975. During his time in law school, Tinder worked at the U.S. Attorney's office in Indianapolis, which helped him get a job as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana when he graduated. In 1977, he entered private practice in Indianapolis, which he remained until he was appointed as the lead attorney in the local U.S. Attorney's office in 1984. He also worked as a public defender in 1977-1978 and as a chief trial deputy from 1979-1982 for Marion County. He remained the U.S. Attorney until his nomination to the Court of Appeals. Tinder also acted as an adjunct law professor at Indiana University from 1980 to 1988.
