Gretchen Gutman is Associate Vice President for Governmental Relations at Ball State University. Prior to accepting this position she was a partner at the law firm Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP in Indianapolis. Gutman has more than 20 years experience in the legislative and political arenas, and is widely recognized for her understanding of Indiana's school finance system and property tax assessment and tax policy.
Gutman began her public service career as public finance director for the Allen County Commissioners, followed by nearly a decade as Chief Advisor to the Senate Finance Committee of the Indiana General Assembly. She then entered the private sector as Midwest Regional Manager for the international energy company Mirant.
In 1999 Gutman was named to Indianapolis Business Journal's "Forty Under 40" list of influential people; in 2009 she was recognized as a "Woman of Influence" by the same publication. She was the recipient of the Hall Render Killian Heath & Lyman State and Local Tax Award in 1997, Sagamore of the Wabash in 2001, and was selected as the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs 2008 Distinguished Alumna of the Year.
Gutman earned a BA in History and an MPA in Public Affairs Management from IU Bloomington, as well as a JD from the Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis.
