Cheryl Gibson Sullivan is the Chief Executive Officer for the American Academy of Nursing. She is the chief spokesperson and liaison on behalf of the Academy with the executive and legislative branches of U.S. government, major policy organizations, the media, and foundations.
Formerly, Sullivan served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy for U.S. Senator Evan Bayh, working with organizations and opinion leaders throughout the country to provide leadership in evaluating current federal policy and identifying and analyzing new initiatives. Sullivan served as Vice Chancellor for External Affairs for IUPUI, was Cabinet Secretary for the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, and was the Issues Director during Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign.
Sullivan completed the State and Local Program for Senior Executives at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She has served on numerous committees including the Children and Families Committee of the American Public Welfare Association, and the Executive Board of the National Council of Governors' Policy Advisors.
Sullivan received a BS in Biological Sciences from the University of Maryland and a MSES degree from Indiana University. She continues to be involved with IU as an engaged member of the Jaguars Athletics Board.
