About Grace S. Rozycki

Grace S. Rozycki, MD, MBA is the Willis D. Gatch Professor of Surgery and Executive Vice-Chairman of the Department of Surgery as well as the Director of the Indiana Injury Institute. Dr. Rozycki came to Indiana University School of Medicine in May from Emory University School of Medicine where she served as Chief of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Emergency General Surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital for almost 19 years. Dr. Rozycki also served as Vice Chair of Academic Affairs for the Department of Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine. Additionally, between 1997 and 2001, she served as Program Director for the Surgical Critical Care Residency as well as Fellowship Director for Trauma/Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program.

She is the current Secretary-Treasurer of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and is a Past President of the Southeastern Surgical Congress and the Georgia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. She is committed to education and mentoring as her Mentor Program is in its 17th year. In 2011, Dr. Rozycki was the recipient of the American Medical Student Association Women Leaders in Medicine Award.

Dr. Rozycki is a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer and was largely responsible for the development of the surgeon-performed Focused Assessment for the Sonographic Examination of the Trauma Patient (FAST). She has performed the seminal studies on the technique and accuracy of surgeon-performed ultrasound in patients with post-trauma hemothorax, cardiac tamponade, hemoperitoneum, solid organ injuries, intra-abdominal abscesses, and femoral deep venous thrombosis.
