About Sue Marquis Bishop

Dr. Sue Marquis Bishop is the retired Dean of the School of Nursing at University of North Carolina in Charlotte, which she led from 1992 to 2004. Under her tenure, the nursing school transformed from the College of Nursing and Health Professions to the School, and expanded into health and human services. The school also had its facilities redesigned under Bishop's leadership. For her leadership of the school and within the state, Bishop was a finalist for 1999 Distinguished Woman of the Year of North Carolina. Bishop received her master's degree in nursing from the IU School of Nursing in Indianapolis and maintained a private practice in marital and family therapy for 13 years before earning a doctorate in educational psychology from the IU School of Education.

Bishop has been on numerous scholarly review panels and task forces for the National Institute of Mental Health. She has published widely on nursing theories and is the past president of the National Society for Education and Research in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. For her professional contributions, Bishop was elected by her colleagues as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and was honored with the National Youth Advocacy Award by the Advocates of Child Psychiatric Nursing and with the IU School of Nursing's Distinguished Service Award. She also has received the IU School of Education Distinguished Alumni Award.
