About John Bartlow Martin

John Bartlow Martin is a native of Hamilton, Ohio, and a graduate of DePauw University. For the major portion of his career he has been a free-lance writer, contributing articles to such magazines as Harper's, The Saturday Evening Post and The Reader's Digest, and authoring eleven books.

A second aspect of his career began with his service on the campaign staff of Adlai Stevenson in 1952. Mr. Martin subsequently was a member of the campaign staffs of Stevenson in 1956, John F. Kennedy in 1960, Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964, and Robert F. Kennedy and Hubert H. Humphrey in 1968. Named Ambassador to the Dominican Republic in 1962, he served in that post until 1964. Several academic appointments followed: Senior Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies, Wesleyan University, Connecticut, 1964-65; Visiting Fellow in Public Affairs at Princeton University, 1966-67; and Visiting Professor in the Graduate Center, City University of New York, 1968.

Mr. Martin has received numerous honors, including the Sigma Delta Chi magazine award in 1950 and 1957; the Benjamin Franklin magazine award in 1953, 1955, 1956 and 1957; and an Indiana Authors' Day award in 1967 for Overtaken by Events (1966). Among his earlier books were Indiana: An Interpretation (1947), Adlai Stevenson (1952), The Deep South Says Never (1957), and The Pane of Class (1959). He is a member of Sigma Delta Chi, The Author's Guild, The Society of Magazine Writers, and the Board of Directors of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis.
