About Kathryn Lucile Shields

Kathryn “Katie” Lucile Shields attended Indiana University Bloomington where she graduated with a degree in elementary education in 1937. She married William “Bill” S. Shields one year prior and together spent the rest of their lives supporting communities across Indiana. Alongside her husband, she supported the Campaign for History that built the northern Indiana Center for History in 1994. Additionally, they supported a challenge grant for Fischoff National Chamber Music Association to underwrite the Bronze Medal Award for senior strings. Williams had a deep interest in health issues which prompted her and husband, William, to become involved in hospice and also become aware of the shortage of nurses. To address this need, they established an endowed chair for the Dean of Nursing at IU South Bend. To further support health care in the region, the shields established an endowed fund for the support and education of health care professionals, both faculty and students. For her philanthropy, service, and leadership, she and her husband were recognized with the Herman B Wells Visionary Award from the IU Foundation. In 2004, they were awarded the Chancellor’s Medal by the Chancellor of IU South Bend.
