About Juanita Kidd Stout

The Honorable Juanita Kidd Stout was a celebrated defender of the rights of all citizens. She studied music and taught in public schools and colleges before finding her true profession, the law. She earned the J.D. and the LL.M. degrees from Indiana University, and in her early career, she was an administrative assistant to a U.S. Circuit Court Judge, a criminal lawyer, and an assistant district attorney.

She was appointed to fill an unexpired term on the County Court of Philadelphia, and was soon overwhelmingly elected to the bench. After several terms in this office, she was named to the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. A stern moralist, Justice Stout required public and professional respect for the management of her court, and her outspoken advocacy of old-fashioned virtues and effective justice was well-known.

A prolific writer on judicial and social issues, Justice Stout served on prestigious government and legal commissions, and earned a multitude of organizational awards for her skills, integrity, and commitment. She was selected for the IU Academy of Law Alumni Fellows and was awarded an honorary LL.D.
