His expertise in the realm of high-performance networking began in the 1980s, when he connected IU and other Midwest universities to the Internet. In the 1990s, he served as IU's lead network engineer, helping design and build Abilene, Internet2's first national network.
Sweeny actively served on several technical advisory groups, working groups, and technical conferences, including the TransPAC3 operational advisory group, the Internet2 Internet Protocol Version 6 Working Group, the National Coordinating Office-sponsored Joint Engineering Team, the Asia-Pacific Advanced Network, and the Quilt Telepresence Working Group.
Sweeny is a recipient of the Internet2 President’s Leadership Award. Upon his retirement in 2014, Sweeny was awarded the E. Ross Bartley Award.
