About Knut Bleicher

Knut Bleicher is recognized as one of Europe's most distinguished experts and educators in management philosophy and in strategic management theory and practice. His preeminence stems from his farsighted scholarly research, as well as from his remarkable ability to bridge the gap between the academic and business worlds. His eloquence, dynamism, and openness have made him an inspiring and admired teacher on both university and corporate levels. He is a sought-after speaker and consultant to various governments and leading European corporations. For almost 40 years, he has been one of Indiana University's best friends abroad.

At the time that he became one of the first students at the Free University of Berlin in the late 1940s, Knut Bleicher did not realize that this would represent his first association with Indiana University; the founding of the Free University had been initiated by then President Herman B Wells. Mr. Bleicher earned a master's

and a doctoral degree in business administration at the Free University, where he received his qualification (HABILITATION) and first appointment as professor. In 1956-57, he was chosen from a select group of young Europeans to come to the United States and Indiana University as a postgraduate scholar and faculty associate under the sponsorship of the European Productivity Agency. Dr. Bleicher has maintained close ties with IU since that time. During the 1980-81 academic year, he was a visiting professor at the School of Business. A member of the board of the IU International Business Forum since 1980, he has helped to shape the organization and facilitate important exchange programs.

After almost two decades at the Justus-Liebig Universitat at Giessen, Dr. Bleicher was named as successor to one of the most eminent European chairs in business administration at the renowned University at St. Gallen, Switzerland. There he was elected as president and then chairman of the board of the Institute of Business Administration. Following that tenure, he was appointed president of the Institute for Technology Management. Throughout his distinguished career, Knut

Bleicher has shown a great commitment to teaching - not only to share knowledge, but to instill values and strive for excellence.

Dr. Bleicher is a prolific writer with a list of 30 books and more than 300 articles to his credit. He is the intellectual force behind the continued development and revision of the prominent St. Gallen Management Model. With the increasing internal and external complexities faced by today's management, the model is a framework of pioneering dimensions for top-management decision making that will be a guide well into the twenty-first century.

All who have had contact with Knut Bleicher recognize his personal integrity, his kindness, and his sensitivity. He brings innovation and a refreshing humor to all his endeavors. His appreciation for the arts is also evidenced by his love of painting. Over the years, he has generously volunteered his expertise and time to an endless number of professional and social organizations. One of Knut Bleicher's finest accomplishments is his unassuming nature and his readiness to help others.
