Franciszek Lyra specialized in the history of American literature and completed his PhD in linguistics at Indiana University Bloomington. He was also the first Polish Fullbright grantee in 1959. After completing his PhD, he returned to Poland and helped establish the English Institute at the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin and subsequently taught at the University of Warsaw. His research focused on the history of American literature, the reception of American literature in Poland, and literary connections between both countries. Lyra authored two books, these being “William Faulkner” and “Edgar Allan Poe” and founded the Polish chapter of the Indiana University Alumni and Friends Association at the University of Warsaw. Dr. Lyra’s contributions and dedication to promoting academic excellence between Poland and the United States will always be remembered and continue to inspire future generations of scholars.
In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the field of American literature and his international work benefiting multiple communities around the globe, Lyra was presented with the Distinguished International Service Award by David Zaret in 2011.
