Richard Kiprono Mibey is a distinguished Kenyan academic, research scientist, and served as Vice Chancellor of Moi University from 2006 to 2016. He is known for his extensive work in mycology, the study of fungi. He received his B.A. in Biology from Warren Wilson College in 1976, and his M.Sc. in Biology from Appalachian State University in 1978. Additionally, he pursued an M.Sc. in Plant Pathology at Oklahoma State University in 1981 and a D.Ed. in Agricultural Education and Extension at the same university in 1984. He returned to Kenya and obtained his Ph.D. in Mycology from the University of Nairobi in 1996.
Mibey discovered more than 120 species of fungi and made major contributions to the biocontrol of water hyacinth in Lake Victoria. He is recognized as a world authority on fungal taxonomy and biodiversity conservation, with over 50 publications and conference papers. Mibey has set a legacy for future biologists.
In recognition of his breakthrough research and international service, Mibey was presented with the Distinguished International Service Award by Michael A. McRobbie in 2013.
