Charles Reafsnyder was Indiana University’s Associate Vice President for International Affairs. A notable figure at IU, he began coordinating an exchange program that sent U.S. faculty abroad to teach Malaysian students and brought those same students to Big Ten Universities to finish their degrees. During a 10-year partnership, IU sent about 300 faculty, including some from regional campuses to Malaysia and brought more than 4,000 Malaysian students to the States, earned more than $50 million in external funding and solidified IU’s spot as a leader in international development assistance. Reafsnyder was also involved in IU’s engagement with the University of Liberia, and the construction of a Center for Excellence in Health and Life Sciences.
Reafsnyder’s dedication to international development and education has had a long-lasting impact on the global initiatives of IU and the Midwest. In recognition of his significant contributions to Indiana University through different leadership roles, Reafsnyder was presented with the Distinguished International Service Award by David Zaret in 2014.
