Nusbaumer's involvement with IPFW goes back to 1970, when he was the vice president of the student council and proposed the mastodon as IPFW's mascot. He earned a bachelor's in education as a member of the fourth graduating class in 1971.
He earned a master’s in sociology from Ball State in 1973 and a Ph.D in sociology with specialty certificate from the program in alcohol and drug addiction from Western Michigan University.
Nusbaumer joined the IPFW faculty in 1976, beginning as an instructor and ultimately becoming a professor of sociology in 1997. He chaired the Department of Sociology from 1980 to1982. His work has resulted in numerous academic and professional publications and presentations.
He has also been an active faculty leader for many years in his department, in the College of Arts and Sciences, and in the IPFW Senate. He served as the presiding officer in the senate and was elected three times as the speaker of the Indiana University faculty.
