Bloomington, Indiana native and IU alumna (B.A. 1905 and M.A. 1906), Mary Hamilton Swindler was a pioneer among women faculty members. She served as professor of classical archaeology at Bryn Mawr College (1912-1949) where her scholarship was honored by the American Council of Learned Societies and the American Association of University Women. An interpretive archaeologist, her book Ancient Painting was a landmark volume and her editorship of the American Journal of Archaeology transformed the publication into an authoritative forum on archaeology.
