The Martindale-Brightwood Alliance for Education Success was launched in an effort to enhance Joyce Kilmer, IPS 69, Francis W. Parker Montessori, IPS 56 and James Russell Lowel, IPS 51 through the Full Service Community School initiative. According to the Coalition for Community Schools, a community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources.
In October 2010, the Community Learning Network of IUPUI was awarded federal funding from the Department of Education to bring together the three Martindale-Brightwood elementary schools in university assisted community schools development. The university, in collaboration with its partners, provides resources and services to meet the needs of individual students, their families and the larger community.
To that end, the Martindale-Brightwood Alliance also runs three IUPUI Adult Learning Centers. Their mission is to provide community based education and career development opportunities for all adults. The Adult Learning Centers strive to meet adult community members wherever they may be on their educational journeys, helping to to transform lives and communities. Working with the Alliance has given IUPUI the chance to make a positive impact in the Martindale-Brightwood community by continuing to encourage adults who are seeking to start, or complete, their education.
