Since starting as an undergraduate student at Indiana University in 1973, Dr. David Hormuth has completed four separate degrees at the university. He graduated with a B.S. in Pre-Optometry in 1977 and went on to complete his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1979. Dr. Hormuth, a native of Southern Indiana, practiced optometry with his father for a year while beginning his medical education at the IU School of Medicine. He graduated as a M.D. in 1983 and began his surgical residency at Methodist Hospital of Indiana. His experience as a general surgery resident afforded him the opportunity to be an active participant in the Heart Transplant Program. He continued his surgical training in cardiothoracic surgery at the medical College of Wisconsin. Returning to Indianapolis in 1990, Dr. Hormuth joined Cardiovascular Surgical Associates at Methodist Hospital. He continued his active practice of cardiac and thoracic surgery for 24 years at Methodist as a member of the IU Health Physicians Cardiovascular Surgery Practice. In 2014, he left IU Health to create Advanced Cardiothoracic Consultants, LLC. In 2015, Dr. Hormuth earned his fourth degree from IU as a student in the first cohort of the Business of Medicine MBA at the IU Kelley School of Business.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Hormuth has distinguished himself in countless ways and has earned many accolades for his accomplishments. He has been an active researcher, producing many published pieces, including a couple in which he was the primary investigator. Dr. Hormuth has also shared his expertise with others as a member of the steering committees and course co-director for a number of seminars. He has participated in several medical milestones for Indiana, including the implantation of the first total artificial heart. He has been consistently named one of America's top surgeons in cardiothoracic surgery, including being listed on U.S. News and World Report's "Top Doctors in Cardiothoracic Surgery" for 2012.
Dr. Hormuth has also given much back to the IU community as a member of the IU School of Optometry's Dean's Development Council. In order to further his support of IU, Dr. Hormuth met with his family in 2013 to explore how their collective philanthropy could honor their father's legacy and have a positive impact on the future of optometry. As a result, the Hormuth family established the Dr. James O. Hormuth Scholarship in honor of the family patriarch. The family chose to endow this scholarship both to benefit future generations of IU Optometry students as well as to commemorate Dr. James Hormuth's inspirational commitment to excellence. The award will be given to a fourth-year student with an interest in ocular disease who has established a record of excellence as demonstrated by a record of academic success and engagement in the field of optometry.
In 2020, Dr. Hormuth was presented the Bicentennial Medal for his distinguished service to Indiana University.
