- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2011
Betty M. Jarboe received her B.S., M.S., and M.A. from Indiana University and is a Librarian Emerita at IU. She worked in the IU Library as a resource librarian from 1967 to 1989. In this capacity, Jarboe was part of many projects, notably the Studies on Indiana: A Bibliography of Theses and Dissertations Submitted to Indiana Institutions of Higher Education for Advanced Degrees, 1902-1977. This bibliography, compiled by Jarboe and her colleague, Kathryn Rumsey, initiated the Indiana Historical Bureau's new Indiana History Resource Series.
Jarboe is the author of three books: Obituaries: A Guide to Sources, John and Charles Wesley: A Bibliography, and Wesley Quotations: Excerpts from the Writings of John Wesley and Other Family Members.
Jarboe has been a generous supporter of IU, donating regularly to the School of Public Health. Jarboe also committed to furthering an award that her husband, Everett E. Jarboe, established. The E.E. Jarboe Award is a prestigious cash prize presented to IU School of Education students who demonstrate excellence in academics, leadership, and service. Following her husband's death, Jarboe increased the scope of the award to make it available to two students each year. The couple also created the John Andrew Jarboe Memorial Outdoor Recreation Scholarship in 1979, in memory of their son John.
