Dr. Edward L. Probst grew up in Dearborn County, Indiana. He received his M.D. from Indiana University in 1964 and practiced dermatology for 32 years in Columbus, Indiana.
Dr. Probst and his wife, Patricia, established the Dr. & Mrs. Edward L. Probst Medical School Scholarship to assist students attending medical school. The Probst's are lifelong members of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. Dr. Probst had experience with the challenges of financing a medical school education. He held multiple jobs to help defray the cost. The stresses of working, while being a medical student, gave Dr. Probst an appreciation for what scholarships could provide; defraying financial expenses and relieving the pressures of paying for school while a student. Dr. Probst is also a member of the Hackney-Norins Society's Board of Directors and has been a longtime donor to the IU School of Medicine's Department of Dermatology.
In honor of his efforts to encourage others to invest philanthropically in the School of Medicine, the School awarded him the Otis R. Bowen, M.D., Distinguished Leadership Award in 2008. In addition to his scholarship and support of the Dermatology Department, Dr. Probst has supported the Victor C. Hackney, M.D., Lab Fund, the Charles Lewis Professorship, and the Norins Professorship in Dermatology, as well as the Moores Fellowship in Dermatopathology. He has made substantial contributions to the Class of 1964 Yoder Scholarship and has created two Dean's Council scholarships.
In 2020, Dr.. Probst was presented the Bicentennial Medal for his distinguished service to Indiana University.
