He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, with distinction, from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1980 and was a member of the National Dental School Honor Society—Omicron Kappa Upsilon. He completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Indiana University Medical Center and Methodist Hospital. He has been a part-time faculty member of the School of Dentistry's graduate oral surgery program since 1983, devoting three days a week to teaching and two to his private practice since 2001.
He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, is involved in many dental organizations, and is Clinical Associate Professor at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. In addition, Dr. Heidelman has published articles in peer reviewed journals, serves as the Clinical Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Hospital Dentistry at Indiana University Hospital and was previously the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon on the Craniofacial team at Riley Hospital in Indianapolis. Dr. Heidelman is also a fellow in the International college of Dentists and the American college of dentists.
Dr. Heidelman is a 2012 recipient of the IUPUI Philanthropy Award, which he received jointly with his wife, Denyce. In addition to their outstanding longtime contributions to the oral surgery faculty, Dr. Heidelman and Denyce have taken a leading position in support of the Hutton Circle, a major fundraising initiative that honors Dr. Charles Hutton, former chair of the Department of Oral Surgery (now Oral Surgery and Hospital Dentistry), and that was established to benefit IU’s oral and maxillofacial residency program. In addition to his own generous support of the fund, Dr. Heidelman has been very successful in his campaign to draw other oral surgeons into the Hutton Circle. Dr. Heidelman is the first current IU dental faculty member to receive this distinguished recognition from the campus.
