The Laura Hare Charitable Trust was formed in memory of Dr. Laura Hare, who was a medical doctor by profession and a naturalist and conservationist by avocation. She loved nature in all of its forms - birds, mammals, and insects and wrote her PhD thesis from the University of Chicago on termites prior to going on to get her medical degree. The purpose of the Laura Hare Charitable Trust is to preserve the natural environment by acquiring and maintaining ecologically significant undeveloped land, such as swamps, marshes, forests, wilderness tracts, and other natural areas, and maintaining the land for the purpose of preserving it in its natural state.
The Trust partnered with IUPUI's Purdue School of Science's Discovering the Science of the Environment institute to establish the Environmental Learning Laboratories Program. The program is open to those who have participated in IUPUI's Discovering the Science of the Environment teacher professional development workshops and have undergone training in the design and implementation of outdoor learning laboratories.
