Mary Hise was an alumna of the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, where she completed her B.N. She went on to receive a M.N. degree from Emory University in 1960. Hise had a long teaching career, serving as a faculty member at Methodist Hospital School in Indianapolis, Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, and the nursing program at IU Southeast, where she taught for 20 years.
Hise was an active volunteer in her community, donating her time to organizations such as the American Red Cross, Lifespan Resources, and United Methodist Women. She and her husband, Paul, volunteered to teach English as a second language in Indonesia, China, and Mexico. Hise was a Christian missionary teacher in Thailand from 1965 to 1966. The couple also volunteered at the elementary school level and taught computer classes at their local YMCA. They served as webmasters for several nonprofits, support leaders for the National Osteoporosis Association, and as active members at Christ United Methodist Church.
The Hises donated generously to the IUPUI School of Nursing for more than 30 years. During that time, they provided a gift to equip a simulated nursing examination room and supported scholarships at the Resource Center for Innovation in Clinical Nursing Education.
