- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2009
In the 1930s, Carl B. Sputh Sr. served as president of the school’s predecessor institution, the Normal College. Collaborating with IU President Herman B Wells, Dr. Sputh’s term culminated with the Normal College-Indiana University merger in 1941. Afterward, Dr. Sputh continued to serve the school in an advisory capacity and, in 1957, a scholarship fund was initiated to celebrate his life and service to IU. Dr. Carl B. Sputh Jr., a graduate of the IU School of Medicine, continued that tradition of service to our school, engendering a spirit of goodwill and philanthropy in his five children and grandchildren. Steadfast school and scholarship supporters, the family led the effort to secure and contribute $50,000 to fund 2008 renovations of the Sputh Round House at Camp Brosius. Immediate family members represent IU medicine, dentistry, and business, and their volunteerism and philanthropy is evident in these university units and beyond.
