Allen Whitehill Clowes was known for his incredible philanthropic spirit and his devotion to the arts. Having attended Herron’s Saturday School as a young child, Allen and the Clowes family have been involved with Herron since the early 1900s. Today, the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation carries on his legacy by supporting art initiatives and cultural programs throughout Indianapolis.
The Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation has had a tremendous impact on Herron. In 2002, Herron received a $2 million gift to help with the construction of Eskenazi Hall. In 2008, Herron again recognized the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation’s generous support when a $1 million gift was made to help with the expansion of Herron’s exisiting sculpture and ceramics facility, located on Indiana Avenue. The expansion will accommodate graduate studios and large work areas, enabling more students to work on public art projects.
