- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2012
The Elizabeth R. and Walter C. Nugent Foundation was created more than 40 years ago. Walter Nugent was a successful businessman who owned real estate in Columbus, Indiana, and operated a brass stamping business. Elizabeth Ruddick Nugent studied voice at conservatories of music in Boston, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis. She was skilled in painting and other art forms as well. The Nugent Foundation contributes $300,000 annually to organizations in Columbus and Bartholomew County, including the Red Cross, the Columbus Symphony and the Columbus Area Arts Council.
In 2012, the Nugent Foundation donated more than $50,000 in scholarships to IUPUC's Division of Nursing. This generous gift will enable students to focus on their studies and increase the number of B.S.N.-qualified nurses to improve the quality of health care in south-central Indiana.
