John Hayes graduated from Indiana University as a Bachelor of Science in Zoology in 1969 and again as a Doctor of Medicine in 1973. During his time as an undergraduate, he participated in the Chapman College World Campus Afloat shipboard international study program, which focused on comparisons of racial prejudice and discrimination in 19 nations. Hayes began his professional career as a tenured faculty member at the IU School of Medicine. After 8 years, he accepted a position as Interim President of St. Vincent Hospitals and Health Services in Indianapolis. This position led him to become CEO of Seton Health of Indiana, a subsidiary of St. Vincent. Following a decade with St. Vincent, Hayes joined Eli Lilly and Company as the Medical Director for US Neuroscience. Over his career with Lilly, Hayes held a number of development positions and was eventually named Vice President of Lilly Research Laboratories. Finally, he was the Global Strategy Leader for Neuroscience Medical Affairs in the year before he retired.
Hayes remained active in retirement, first serving for 18 months as the Executive Director of the National Network of Depression Centers. Stepping out from that position in 2013, Hayes began freelance consulting for the healthcare industry. Apart from his professional roles, Hayes has served on five for-profit and thirteen not-for-profit Boards of Directors or Boards of Trustees. He has served as the chairman of the board of the Indiana Health Industry Forum, Director for Psychiatry of the American Board of Family Medicine, and the President of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine.
Hayes and his wife, Barbara, have been strong benefactors of the School of Informatics. The couple provided leadership-level financial support to the Informatics IMPACT campaign.
