The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation in Indiana has been an important partner to IU. In 2007, Anthem positively impacted the quality, safety, and efficiency of healthcare and advanced life sciences in Indiana by establishing the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Fellowship in Health Informatics. The fellowships are awarded to PhD students with an interest in the exchange of electronic health information across providers.
In January 2011, Anthem provided a $90,000 grant to research and evaluate the extent to which the Physically Active Residential Communities and Schools (PARCS) program is helping the community by measuring, tracking, and analyzing specific individual participant health metrics.
The PARCS program is a successful service-learning partnership between IUPUI and Indianapolis Public Schools, combining volunteerism, service learning, and space, impacting more than 10,000 clients since the program's inception in 2004. PARCS sends physical education students to three IPS community high schools, where low-income community members receive health club benefits without the costs. Students provide individualized wellness indicator assessment, exercise prescription, health promotion advice, and personal training to participants in the schools' workout facilities.
