- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2008
Dr. Arthur "Art" Brill graduated from IU with a Doctor of Education degree in 1969. He went on to become a faculty member at the IU School of Education at IUPUI. In the 1970s and 1980s, Brill and his wife, Betty Ann, provided innovative leadership for the Teacher Corps program that helped working professionals become credentialed teachers. Teacher Corps participants interned on-site at local public schools and engaged in community service. Teacher Corps pioneered the Professional Development Schools model of teacher education, laying the foundation for the School of Education to become a state leader in this area. To the Brills' credit, more than 30 years later, many Teacher Corps graduates are still educators in Indianapolis Public Schools and other districts around the state and country.
In 2004, the Art and Betty Ann Brill Scholarship was established to honor their service by supporting graduate students studying to become teachers through the Transition to Teaching Program.
