About Mary Popp

Mary Popp has spent her entire academic and professional career at Indiana University. She first graduated with a B.S. in Education with a major in School Library and Audiovisual Services/Sociology in 1971, and she stayed on to earn her MLS from IU in 1973.

Popp has served in a wide variety of roles on campus, starting as an assistant librarian in the Graduate Library School library. Since, she has served as the head of the Halls of Residence Libraries and later the head of Undergraduate Library Services, the reference/instruction librarian and coordinator for bibliographic instruction for Undergraduate Library Studies, head of the library instruction, electronic services librarian in the Electronic Resources and Services Public Services Librarian for Information Technology, and research and discovery services librarian in the Digital User Experience Department until her retirement in 2014.

Popp has been a member of the Library Instruction Round Table with the American Library Association since 1979, including serving as president in 1984-85. She also has been the Chair of the ALA’s prestigious Carroll Preston Baber Research Award since 2004, and Popp was given the Achievement Recognition Award from the Machine Assisted Reference Section of the ALA in 2008. She also served as the President of Reference and User Services Association of the ALA in 2012-13.
