- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2006
Cheryl Strain completed her B.S. and M.S. in Education at Indiana University in 1966 and 1969, respectively. She is a retired elementary school teacher.
Strain has been a longtime supporter of Arts for Learning, an organization that gives Indiana students opportunities to engage in empowering art-related activities and experiences. She has served terms as chair of nearly every one of the organization's committees and has also been on the Board of Directors, serving as chairperson for some time. She is one of the most vocal advocates in the community, having personally raised countless donations for the organization. She is the only Indiana affiliate board member to have served on the National Young Audiences Board of Directors, in addition to several national committees, and was even a recipient of the National Board Member of the Year Award. In an effort to recognize Strain's extraordinary contributions to the organization, Arts for Learning has decided to create a scholarship in her honor, which will allow a board member, staff member and/or teaching artist to attend the annual Young Audiences’ National Conference.
