Dr. Siegel was born and educated in southeastern Michigan. He earned both his BA in 1950 and his PhD in 1974 from the University of Michigan. He earned his MSW from Wayne State University in 1955.
Dr Siegel worked as a social work counselor and program supervisor from 1955 to 1962 at the Jewish Family and Community Service, Chicago and the Jewish Family and Children’s Service in Detroit. In the latter agency, Dr. Siegel supervised the program of services to the aged.
In 1962, Dr. Siegel was appointed Assistant Professor of Social Work at the University of Michigan where he directed a multi-year program to develop curriculum in services to the aging. While at Michigan, Dr. Siegel taught in all areas of the curriculum, served as Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, as a chair of the Community Policy and Administration Division. Dr. Siegel left Michigan in 1979 to serve as Professor and Director of the School of Social Work at the University of Cincinnati. In 1985, Dr. Siegel accepted appointment as Dean and Professor at the Indiana University School of Social Work. He served until retirement in 1994, returning during 1999-2000 as Interim Dean.
Dr. Siegel published in the field of aging, on social welfare labor force and educational administration. In 1992, he was appointed by then Indiana Governor Evan Bayh to chair a state Commission on Abused and Neglected Children and their Families. Dr. Siegel was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash in 1994 for this service. From 1996-1998, Dr. Siegel served as volunteer to establish and direct the IUPUI Office of Neighborhood Resources.
Dr. Siegel served as Chairman of the Board of CICOA-the Access Network-the eight county agency serving the aged and persons with disabilities; as a member of the Indianapolis Consortium for Creative Aging and Retirement planning group; on the leadership group of AdvantAge Initiative; and the Board of Director’s of the Children’s Coalition. Dr. Siegel was a member of the 90th Anniversary Planning Committee of the IU School of Social Work, a member of the Dean’s Advisory Committee, and a Contributing Editor of the School’s journal, Advances in Social Work.
