Barbara Simpson received a Bachelor's degree from Western Kentucky University and a Master's degrees in Chemistry and Geology from the IUPUI School of Science. In 2001, she retired from her position as Director of Human Resources at Eli Lilly and Company. Over her 32 years with Eli Lilly, she held a number of chemistry and management positions. She has served as a member of the School of Science Dean's Advisory Council, as well as the Center for Earth and Environmental Science Advisory Board.
Simpson has enjoyed a remarkably active retirement. After retirement from Lilly she co-founded the Indiana Casting for Recovery Program, part of a national nonprofit wellness and education program for breast cancer survivors. She was also an advocate for the restoration and purchase of Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area. Currently, Simpson is the Indiana Wildlife Federation's Conservation Policy Director. She joined IWF as its Executive Directory in January 2011 and retired from that position in April 2015.
Simpson and her husband, Eric, made significant gifts to the Lilly ARBOR Project and the Center for Earth and Environmental Studies in 2000 and 2001. Apart from generous financial donations, the Simpsons dedicated hours of volunteer work to help the reforestation of 1,300 native trees. Additionally, the couple was extremely influential in securing Eli Lilly and Company's commitment as the project's anchor sponsor.
