IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2002

About Indiana Public Schools

In 2002, the Center for Service and Learning recognized Superintendent Pat Pritchett and Indianapolis Public Schools for being outstanding community partners. IPS worked closely with the Center for Service and Learning on the Westside Education Task Force, a group of Near Westside community leaders, residents, service providers, IPS representatives, and University representatives who are concerned about educational issues. Under the leadership of Pat Pritchett, IPS supported the Westside Education Task Force’s efforts to bring schools back into their community and to provide input into the development of the new schools. An example of the success of this collaborative partnership has been the development of George Washington Community School, which received national recognition as a community school model and is an ongoing partner with the Center for Service and Learning.
