Nelson Price is the author of “Indiana Legends: Famous Hoosiers from Johnny Appleseed to David Letterman,” a book of profiles of 160 famous Hoosiers, and of “Indianapolis: Leading The Way,” a photo-oriented book about the city of Indianapolis. He also is a feature writer/columnist for The Indianapolis Star. Price has won more than 40 state, local, civic and national awards for his profiles of newsmakers. He grew up in Indianapolis and is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Indiana University, with degrees in journalism and psychology. In 1995, Gov. Evan Bayh named Price a Sagamore of the Wabash.
He has given freely of his time to help young journalists. From 1995-1998, Nelson organized an annual, day-long Pulliam Scholar program at The Indianapolis Star, providing seminars and writing sessions for 30 outstanding college journalism students from across the state of Indiana. He provides one-on-one critiques for the finalists in the annual Keating Feature Writing competition, co-sponsored by the School of Journalism. He is a frequent guest lecturer in IUPUI journalism courses. Since 1982, Price has served as chairman of The Sagamore Advisory Board, which is responsible for appointing the editor of the national award-winning student newspaper at IUPUI.
