Ken Zeller is recognized as a legendary labor leader in Indianapolis. He served as the President of the AFL-CIO from 1997 to 2009. The AFL-CIO is a federation of 800 local unions across the state belonging to 50 International Unions. In total, the Indiana State AFL-CIO represents more than 300,000 working Hoosiers. He also served as a member of the Indiana Advisory Council at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Prior to his election, he served from 1989 to 1997 as the Commissioner of the Indiana Department Labor under both Governors Evan Bayh and Frank O’Bannon. Zeller also worked as a member of the Mine Workers and the USW, where he served as president of USW Local 12775.
