- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2003
Vera Bradley Co-founders Barbara Bradley Baekgaard and Patricia R. Miller began raising funds for breast cancer research in 1993 after the loss of their dear friend, Mary Sloan. Since then, their genuine commitment to this cause has evolved into the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer and $23 million in contributions so far. Together with their donors, event participants and volunteers, they hope for a future free from breast cancer. Since 1998, the Foundation has gifted over a million dollars to the IU School of Medicine in support of breast cancer research. Their goal is to help scientists discover the cause of breast cancer and to cure this disease. In the early 2000s, the Vera Bradley Foundation also pledged an additional $2 million in philanthropy to create the Vera Bradley Center for Cancer Biomarker Discovery.
