- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2003
The Regenstrief Foundation was founded by the late Samuel Regenstrief in 1967 as a way to establish a philanthropic legacy. Regenstrief, an Austrian immigrant, founded one of the world's largest dishwashing machine companies and became a millionaire-philanthropist. During his life, he was a nationally recognized authority on industrial production techniques. A visionary, he believed that the fusion of technology, innovation, and medicine could increase efficiency and provide better health care for more people at less cost. He was a generous supporter of the IU School of Medicine as well as the IU Hospital.
The Regenstrief Foundation is also a core supporter of the Regenstrief Institute, an internationally respected informatics and healthcare research organization, recognized for its role in improving quality of care, increasing efficiency of healthcare delivery, preventing medical errors and enhancing patient safety. Furthermore, the Foundation created the Regenstrief Chair in Medical Informatics to further health services research and medical informatics.
