Joseph F. Lohman was an electrician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local Union No. 481 from 1966 until his death. Lohman retired in August of 2010 after having served as Vice President of the 6th District of the IBEW, covering the states of Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Previously, he worked as an International Representative for the IBEW, as Business Manager for IBEW Local 481, and as a Business Agent and Vice President of IBEW Local 481. He also served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Indiana State Building and Construction Trades Council. He was a mentor and friend to hundreds of people in the labor movement.
As a Union leader, Lohman was instrumental in the construction of many Indianapolis landmarks, including the Hoosier Dome, the AUL Building, and the Bank One Chase Tower. Beyond his Union duties, Lohman supported the
IU Division of Labor Studies by serving on the statewide advisory committee and cultivating the Organize Indiana Program. Through his leadership, Lohman has been a voice in improving the lives of many Hoosier workers. Among his many awards and honors, Lohman was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Frank O'Bannon for his contributions to the people of the State of Indiana. In 2006, he was inducted into the Ivy Tech Labor Hall of Fame.
In 1988, Lohman received his B.A. in labor studies from the George Meany Institute, in Washington D.C.
