Neil E. Matthew was born January 19, 1925 in Anderson, Indiana. His education began with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Arizona State University. He worked as a teacher for one year following his graduation, but then was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Germany, where he had the opportunity to see art during his furloughs and three day passes. Upon returning to the U.S., he enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts Degree at Indiana University. He joined the Indiana University faculty in 1964, five years after receiving his MFA, and began teaching at the Herron School of Art on the Indianapolis campus. In 1989-1990 he retired from his position as Associate Professor Emeritus at IUPUI.
Matthew and his wife, Jeannette, traveled extensively in the United States and Europe over the course of his career at Herron School of Art. Many of his trips provided sources of inspiration for his artwork in the mediums of photography and painting. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States.
In memory of his wife, Jeannette, Matthew created the Jeannette Morrow Matthew Fund for Archival Photography at the IUPUI University Library. The fund has helped archivists digitize collections of photographs and materials. Jeannette Matthew was the campus’ first archivist.
