Marvin L. Bittinger is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics Education at IUPUI. Dr. Bittinger pursued his undergraduate studies at Manchester College and graduate studies at The Ohio State University and Purdue University. He is the author of over 163 mathematics textbooks ranging in topics from developmental mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to brief calculus. He was Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy in 1978. Dr. Bittinger has a passionate interest in Christian theology and apologetics. He often gives a talk entitled “Mathematics in the Christian Faith.”
In 2005, Dr. Bittinger and his wife Elaine made a $1,000,000 bequest in their estate to establish the Bittinger Chair in Mathematics Education at IUPUI. Created to support the expansion of the math education research team in the Department of Mathematical Science, the Bittinger’s gift has enabled the school to dedicate a tenure track research position to the study of best practices in math education, potentially impacting college student and youth mathematical learning across the country.
