Daisy Hinkle Garton was a longtime Bloomington resident who was very active in the local community, with Indiana University, and with the Monroe County Historical Society. Upon her death in 2003, she donated her 19th century historical farmhouse to Bloomington Restorations, Inc. in order for it to become a house museum.
Garton was an ardent supporter of IU. She earned her BPSM in 1929, an M.A. in Music Education and Composition in 1930, and a B.M. in Violin and Cello in 1932. She started her 39-year teaching career at Murray State Teacher's College before returning to Bloomington, where she continued teaching until her retirement in 1971. She played together with her husband in the Bloomington Symphonic Orchestra. After her husband's death, Garton established the Joseph Nathan Garton Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Jacobs School of Music. Later, she also established The Lennart A. von Zweyberg Cello Scholarship and was influential in the decision to endow the Martha & Fred Arto Music Scholarhsip at Jacobs. Additionally, she established the Molly Warn Dreist Nursing Scholarship at the IUPUI School of Nursing.
