Robert Anthony Lucas served IU in an extraordinarily wide range of caring, cooperative and consultative roles. He was president of the Gary Alumni Club, a member of the IU Northwest Advisory Board, a council member, and later president, of the IU Alumni Association. He was a member and vice president of the Board of Trustees and the IU Foundation Board.
Lucas was appointed to the Indiana Higher Education Commission, and added his expertise to decisions on long-range planning and fiscal matters for all state colleges. A love for university involvement was nurtured during his time as a student; he was president of the IU Student Union and of the class of 1943, and received a JD degree in 1949 with honors.
Lucas was highly respected in the legal profession when he began his career as a law clerk at the Seventh Circuit Court of appeals. He was a probate commissioner for the Lake Superior Court for eighteen years and served a term on the Governor's Legislative Probate Study Commission. Lucas was a member of prestigious legal and private business boards and commissions at the state and national level for many years.
