Lee D. Fuller attended McLean Hospital School of Nursing in Waverly, Massachusetts, graduating in 1932. At the time, McLean was an elite school in a psychiatric hospital and Fuller discovered a passion for psychiatric nursing. He served as a contract civilian nurse to the Persian Gulf Service Command. After completing his service, he attended New York University, where he earned B.S. and M.A. degrees.
He completed his education at Indiana University, where he earned a Ph.D. in nursing. In August 1955 he was appointed assistant professor of nursing and assistant consultant in nursing education at Indiana University and the Indiana Department of Mental Health. In 1960, Fuller was appointed associate professor of nursing and in 1975 professor of nursing. He retired from Indiana University in 1980 as professor emeritus.
