James G. Simms was a Terra Haute native. He attended the Riverside Military Academy in Hollywood and earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Rose Hulman Institute of Technology. He served in the Navy during World War II. Following the war, he used his G.I. benefits to earn his M.B.A. from Indiana University.
After graduating, Simms moved to Columbus, IN, to work for Cummins Engine Co. until 1960. He left Cummins to join J.J.B. Hilliard and Son, where he served as branch manager and vice president for 33 years.
He was dedicated to community service in Columbus and served on numerous not-for-profit boards and committees. He was influential in bringing an extension of Indiana University-Purdue University to Columbus.
