About Marcia Pickett

Marcia Pickett was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, where her father, a Bloomington native, had moved to attend college, but her family moved back to Bloomington the year after Marcia and her twin sister were born. She grew up in Bloomington, and her grandmother worked for Herman Wells for 25 years as his cook. Marcia met her husband, Andre, while they were both attending Bloomington North High School.

Marcia served at Indiana University for almost 27 years. She started her career at IU in printing services (1976-79) where she worked as an accounts clerk, receptionist, and senior clerk. Then she worked as secretary in the Department of Political Science (1979-83), and the African Studies Program (1983), before taking a brief period away from the university. From 1986-1990, she returned to IU and worked in the School of Continuing Studies. From 2000-2007 she worked for the Office of Multicultural Affairs and from 2007-2016, she was the executive secretary in the Office of the President.

When President McRobbie presented Mrs. Pickett with the Bartley Award in 2015, he pointed out that Marcia was always the first person people would see when they enter the office, and she was often the first person people speak to when they call. She represented the university extremely well throughout her tenure and was known widely across campus for her friendly and welcoming nature complemented by a wonderful sense of humor and positive outlook.
